We decided fairly abruptly yesterday to go along with (well, follow) my parents-in-law to PA to visit my husband’s grandmother. She’s 89 or so, so we know we should make the most of our opportunities. It was a lovely trip, despite grey, rainy weather.
We gave our littlest a bottle of formula before the trip and she napped almost all the way – a huge improvement over screaming for an hour of a 2-1/2 hour trip, let me just tell you. Our older child had a good time just looking out the window. Once we got there, we had a nice visit. Great-grandma held our little one and oohed and ahhed over her and made a big deal out of her latest accomplishments (being able to hold herself sitting up, once put in that position). Our oldest got to run around outside with various people to play with – that’s his favorite pastime so he was blissful as well.
We went to dinner at a nice family diner; it was a good break from chains and fast food type places. They made your standards: ham, roast beef, spaghetti, fried shrimp, etc. I had the fried shrimp, and that was very good; I had forgotten how much I enjoy that. After a relatively brief visit after the dinner, we headed home. It was about 2 hours and 45 minutes of visit and 5 hours of driving time, but it was great to see everybody and to get out of the house. I think it was a great change of pace for the children as well.
